As the granddaughter of a naturopath/masseuse, I grew up using natural remedies for anything and everything. It wasn’t common place back then, so I love that natural alternatives are becoming much more mainstream and far easier to access than ever before.

One of our Members, Bio-First, was recently named the ‘Most Innovative Non-Toxic Skincare Brand 2022’ for their genuine natural remedies. I asked co-founder, Byron Darroch, how the business came to be and why enabling families to solve their skin issues and enhance their immune support is so important to them. 

 

Q: HOW DID BIO-FIRST COME ABOUT?  

Our family had dealt with chronic health issues for many years and we became increasingly frustrated at the lack of choice for those of us who wanted to manage our family’s health ourselves, rather than constantly deferring to a medical professional. We were also shocked at the lack of product innovation in the past 70 years (most solutions that people use today were invented around the time of Teflon!), and we just knew that we could do a better job. My background is in the life sciences industry and my co-founder (and mother-in-law), Dr Jude Lenart, has a PhD in Natural Medicine along with decades of experience and extensive studies in the field. Together, we strongly felt that we could create superior and effective remedies using all-natural ingredients backed by extensive scientific evidence for those everyday health issues that families’ want to self-manage.

Q: YOU’RE IN BUSINESS WITH YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW, DR JUDE LENART, HOW DO YOU MANAGE BUSINESS & FAMILY? 

It’s definitely something we need to be conscious of. As much as possible, we work to keep the business separate and we don’t discuss work when the family is all together. Not always easy, but if we just talked work all the time it would be unfair to other family members – so we make a conscious effort not to.

Q: HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR RELATIONSHIP STRONG WITH YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW? 

Honesty and transparency is the key. It is a core strength of ours – that we’re not afraid to discuss things with each other, or say “I need a break”. It is also an important part of what our business is about – authenticity. It is not always smooth sailing, as with any relationship, but we really complement each other in the business nicely.

Q: THE THING I LOVE MOST ABOUT BIO-FIRST IS …
That we get to really help people. Some of our customers have been dealing with health issues for years and with our unique natural remedies, we’re able to help resolve those for them quickly. We help people with issues such as psoriasis, eczema

Q: MY BIGGEST BUSINESS CHALLENGE SO FAR HAS BEEN …
Dealing with a massively COVID affected supply chain. Getting the raw materials and packaging we need on time has been hugely challenging. Some people might think it has calmed down, but if anything it is worse now than this time last year.

Q: THE BEST LESSON I’VE LEARNED IS …
You always need to be working on your marketing messaging with your core customer in mind. What you think might be crystal clear, sounds like gibberish to someone looking for a remedy to some health issue they have. It is something that we spend a lot of time on, getting it right can double our conversion rates (and more!).

Our customer stories. When we hear from our customers about how we’ve been able to help them, it just validates why we’re doing it and encourages us to keep on going! We’ve now got multiple instances of 3 generations of the same family using our Manuka Skin Saver and Liquid Health Oral Spray – it makes us so proud!

Q: IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY (LIKE $10 MILLION), WOULD YOU STILL COME TO WORK? WHY/WHY NOT?
Yes, I would. Jude (my mother-in-law) & I co-founded this business to help families with natural remedies that work. We’re not done yet and have a lot more people to help. $10mil would just help us reach those people faster.

Q: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BOOKS/PODCASTS/SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS?
There are too many to list here, but one that I do enjoy when I have time is Tim Ferriss’ podcast. His long form style is great and a perfect antidote to today’s short attention spans.
