I first met Georgia Fletcher when I launched Buy On The Beaches, just after our NB lockdown in Summer 2020-21. Out of nowhere, she messaged me and offered her support. I gratefully accepted it and have been in awe of her incredible efficiency, not to mention her ability to achieve anything and everything she puts her mind to, ever since.

In the last 12 months, Georgia has not only taken over Buy on the Beaches but has made some really fundamental changes to her business model. I wanted to know a bit more about what inspired her to make those changes and how her business is looking for 2022.

Q: Your business has undergone some pretty inspiring changes over the last 12 months. What has driven those changes?
That’s a really good question. I’m a big lover of learning, I also like to put myself out of my comfort zone and I love helping people. I think those 3 things have allowed me to add 3 new services to my business in this last year – Pilates Teacher, Funeral Celebrant, and Celebrant Mentor.

Q: Tell me a bit more about how these new services came to be …
I was a primary school teacher and when I stepped outside of the classroom, I realised that my teaching skills were actually transferable to other areas of my life and business. I have always been really interested in exercise and advocating for a healthy, active lifestyle, so during lockdown, I decided to do a Pilates teaching course. I now offer my clients a pilates class on the morning of their wedding – it’s such a calm, nourishing way to start their special day.

I have also become a funeral celebrant, which was driven by my desire to adapt my skills to different celebrations, to develop personally and professionally, and to help people in their hour of need.

And I have been mentoring other celebrants too. This was born out of a need by other celebrants who approached me and asked how I do what I do. I now have a few zooms a week with other celebrants and they tell me they walk away feeling much more inspired and with a clear direction.

Q: What are you motivated by?
I’m definitely motivated by the people I work with. I walk away from weddings feeling absolutely elated – I love meeting the couples, forming part of their love story and then playing a role in their special day. For funerals, I feel incredibly honoured to be trusted with the service – it’s such a private time. And for my mat pilates and celebrant mentoring, my heart just explodes knowing that I have helped others improve their health and fitness, or their business. I love being surrounded by people and helping others.

Q: Have you ever suffered imposter syndrome?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Absolutely – I often wonder if I am good enough at what I do especially to mentor other celebrants! The feedback I get is so positive though that I push through those negative thoughts and focus on the fact that I’m helping others to level up their businesses. It’s really empowering.

Q: Are you a planner or do you like to wing it?
A bit of both! It’s no secret that I love being organized, I love structure and I love managing my time. But I also go with the flow because the beauty of weddings, funerals and pilates classes (and parenting!!!) is that things can (and do!) change at the drop of a hat. Over the last 2.5 years, I believe that being calm, compassionate and empathetic can be so much more productive when it comes to planning. I’m much more open-minded, more agile and more flexible than ever before.

Q: Which apps are crucial for your business?
I use Planoly for scheduling Instagram and Facebook.
I use Calendly to schedule in meetings with couples, whether that’s rehearsals, face-to-face meetings or zooms.
My mail & message apps on my phone ensure that I’m very accessible and very responsive to emails and text messages. Being there for couples every step of the way is really important to me.

Q: How do you balance work and life?
My approach to work-life balance changes daily! Every week is really different for me – some weeks are filled with meetings, others are rehearsals, weddings, and funerals. I know my limitations and I know how to create the best version of myself. For example, I would never schedule a day of meetings on a Monday after two weddings on a Saturday. I recharge by doing pilates myself, hanging out at home or keeping busy as a mum of a toddler because I know I can’t be the best celebrant if I keep pouring from an empty cup.

Q: How is 2022 looking for you?
2022 looks like flexibility – to me it’s a year of fluidity. I’m approaching it with a rejuvenated mindset and treating 2022 as a revamped version of the last two and a half years, I suppose. I feel like we’ve been through (what I hope is) the worst of it and now it’s about embracing whatever change comes our way.
My goal is to stay healthy, be really grateful for everything I have and then focus on guiding couples through their wedding planning process. I’m fully booked for weddings until 2023 – many weekends I have up to 5 weddings!!
